Cloudy and cool when we got up ... as promised. Made a quick stroll through the weekly market in Rousillon; a very meager event! At Erin's recommendation, we did the walk through the ochre hills. Beautiful, but hot and humid w/no breeze. Rinsed the red off our shoes before we headed into the Luberon east of Roussillon.
We visited the following villages, most of them on hilltops, meaning lots of narrow twisty roads, a real test for Tina's driving. (An unexpected detour put us on little more than a cart track.) We started in St-Saturnin-les-Apt, a pretty little town with a church that had some interesting frescoes. Next stop was Vien where we entered the town along the classic plane tree lined avenue. Nice place with very narrow canyon-like lanes, but not much going on except for a boisterous group lunching on an outdoor terrace.
Proceeded on to Saignon, where we saw a beautiful small hotel on a square with a fountain. There were also 2 well preserved lavaries, quite a few small restaurants and a bonus.... public W/C's! Buoux (pronounced "by-oox") was a disappointment; so tiny, we just drove through.
Finished up in Bonnieux, the largest of today's villages/towns, though still quite small. On the way back to Roussillon, we passed the Julien (for Julius Ceasar) bridge. It was built by the Romans in the 3rd century BC and still in use!
It was cloudy all day, but the only time it rained hard was when we were driving to Vien. Lots of lavender fields (all harvested) and stone fruit groves on today's drive. Only an occasional vineyard. Tall mountains along much of the drive, poorly seen due to low cloud cover.
Walked - 4.9 miles
Drove - 78 km
