Like the Catalonians, the Basques, the Irish, the Welsh, the Scots and others I'm sure, the Bretons have a minority population who are devoted to returning their ancestral language to it's "rightful place" as the official language of their part of the country. Of the 9 departments in Brittany, 5 have accepted this effort. Street signs here in Rennes are written in French (Bretagne) and Breton (Breizh); see photos. We didn't see anything else in the Breton language however.
We devoted the morning to monument/governmental building viewing including the Hotel de Ville/Place de La Maire (town hall) , the Opera House, the Breton Parliament building (burned down by angry fisherman in 1994, rebuilt in 2005), the Abbey de St.George and gardens (now the police department) and the Palais de Commerce. (see photos in that order)
After the PM R&R, we wandered some more quaint areas we hadn't yet seen. It's Monday , so banks and many restaurants and business were closed again today, though some restaurants and and bars opened this evening. We ate at "La Paix" on the Rue de Republique.
As before, 3 days has turned out to be a comfortable stay for us; enough time to visit the "must sees", wander the older parts of town as we like to do , and still leave lots of time to relax.
Finished "All the Light We Cannot See", by Anthony Doerr today.
