Retirement Odyssey

Left Nimes this morning. It's really a very nice city that more Americans should visit. No big museums, a few good Roman sites, plane tree lined boulevards; a very pleasant small city with some nice restaurants.

Easy drive to Salon-de-Provence, our last stop in the Luberon-Provence region before we head for the Cote d'Azur. We're staying in the old Abbey de St Croix. The rooms are remodeled and enlarged monk's cells. It sits high on a hillside with gorgeous views. Our room is vey functional, a good base for rest over the next three days AND there is a beautiful pool! Abbey was founded in XIth century but abandoned in early 1800's, then severely damaged by earthquake in 1909.

Summer is clearly giving way to fall even as we move south. Mornings and evenings are quite cool, especially as it's often windy. All the kids are back in school here and in OR.

We saw the major sights of the town, before driving out to the abbey. This is the hometown of Nostradamus. It also has a XIIth century church and lots of small parks and many fountains, all originally fed by a natural spring/fountain that by now looks like a mushroom made of ferns.

After 7+ weeks of eating dinner in restaurants, we were dying for pasta, even though we know we can get plenty in Rome. Found a nice place where the "pates" is homemade and enjoyed an inexpensive but tasty meal.
