It's the final weekend in July, so the roads are filled with French folks on their 3-5 week summer vacations. Traffic was moderate at first, but moving at the speed limit. Once the road split off to Mont St Michel, things were much better.
We started our day off with a very nice breakfast at our B&B in Bayeux. We were joined by 2 English couples about our age. After breakfast, we went to the weekly market (see photos), a 2 block walk from the B&B, to pick up supplies for lunch on the road, including some artisanal beer.
Fougeres was an unexpectedly satisfying stop on the way to Rennes. The largest medieval castle in Europe (Carcassone is a walled city, not a castle) is found there. There are also 2 lovely churches (St Sulpice and St Leonard) and 2 beautiful gardens, (Jardin de Nonce and Jardin Publique) Lots of ferns in the former; fitting because Fougeres means ferns in French.
Arrived in Rennes and found our B&B easily. It's in a 16th century half-timbered building that tour groups stop in front of to discuss! Finding the off site parking was another matter, a 1/2 hour nightmare of one way and closed/pedestrianized streets made even worse by construction that our GPS was unaware of!! We did finish the day on an up note with a nice dinner at "Chez les Garcons" and a short evening walk. Made a dinner reservation for tomorrow. The restaurant owner has a friend who teaches at PSU in Portland!! Small world.
Walked - 5.5 miles
Drove - 206 km
