Retirement Odyssey

Had a quick breakfast on the way to the arena in Arles. It's only the 21st largest of existing Roman arenas. Don't think we saw it when we were here in 1972 (1 year before we were married). It looks good from the outside, but has been spoiled by the erection of bleacher seating throughout the interior so that they can have events like the Camargue (no killing the bulls, just pulling a ribbon off his horns) and Spanish bullfights and some concerts and mock gladiator matches.

Still cool enough after the arena to go to the Wednesday market, about a mile long following the 2 major roads in town. Far more middle eastern people here than farther north. It was getting warmer as the Provencal sun made it's appearance in the bright blue sky, so we had lunch in the shade at the Place de la Republique where the obelisk from the Roman circus was re-installed in front of the Hotel de Ville.

Post lunch, we visited the cloister of St Trophime (XII- XIV centuries ) and adjacent church. In the cloister's chapter room, there are tapestries documenting the first crusade. The church's tympanum, constructed in the middle ages, is reputed to be one of the best in the world. (one of the panels shows St Etienne being stoned to death and his spirit leaving his mouth to be received by angels in heaven.)

In the heat of the day , we retreated to the hotel for rest and reading. Tina was able to make an appointment at a local salon for a haircut etc. tomorrow afternoon. We'll take care of our sight seeing earlier in the cool of the day.
