Retirement Odyssey

The weather prediction for today was cloudy and cool with occasional showers .... and that was exactly the case! Quite a change from yesterday. Tomorrow is predicted to be nice again. Though this was a typical laundry day for us, we decided to put that off.

Nice breakfast here at the B&B in a beautiful kitchen-dining room-living room space. (See photos; the owner is a decorator.) Then off to the arena, built in 100 AD and the best preserved of all Roman arenas. (Not the largest, just 24,000 capacity). Good audio guide, though we had to "hide"/shelter from the cold wind at times while listening.

Learned a lot about arena shows, payed for by a wealthy sponsor in town to honor a person or event. Began with animals fighting animals, followed by men fighting animals, then animals attacking unprotected Christians (the audience often left for the concession stands during this portion) and finished with the featured gladiator matches. 90% of the time, neither gladiator died.

Turns out Nimes is the French capitol of Spanish style bull fighting. Next weekend is the Fall Feria when such fights will occur.

Picniced back in the B&B dining room, then set out to ramble the old part of town for a bit. Will save the gardens and fountains for tomorrow, hoping for better weather to enjoy them.

Walked - 5.3 miles

Drove - zero km
