Retirement Odyssey

Ended our stay in Villeneuve and headed off to Les Baux. Very nice back roads, lots of bikers, some sections lined by large plane trees on both sides of the road; that Napolean had his "subjects" working very hard!!

Hard to find parking in Les Baux ..... surprise surprise! Parked way down the road from the lower town and had to walk up in the bright sun and heat.

The lower town was VERY touristy, mostly restaurants and shops selling Provencal trinkets. (even a locust that made the sound of the real thing.) The chateau at the top was mostly ruins with some scary steps to the top. Very hot and sunny as expected.

The road from Les Baux to Arles was simple, but the final mile through the ancient city of Arles was difficult as expected. They say our room here is on the "deuxieme etage", but with 64 steps from ground floor to our room, I'd say that's like the 5th floor! It's a nice room, but dated. Does have nice A/C though!! In a building from 1654.

We're only a block south of the Rhone and 3 blocks west of the Amphitheater, so it's a great location. Did a bit of wandering and went to the "best" ice cream store in town. (We weren't impressed.) I had a flavor that was olive oil, almonds and honey. (Frigoli??)

Had a nice 1/2 carafe of rose in the lower courtyard of our hotel; (only 5 euros!) before heading off to dinner. It has cooled off nicely this PM and we hope for somewhat cooler weather tomorrow.

Walked - 5.9 miles

Drove - 67 km
