Retirement Odyssey

Hard to believe we've been traveling for 3 weeks as of today! Plenty of good weather, fine meals, easy driving (until we look for parking.)

Our home for the next four days is in the Breton city of Vannes (pronounced "van"), our last stop in Bretagne. We're staying in a lovely, ancient manor house called La Maison de la Garenne, a B&B.We're on the top of 3 floors. The front door is just across the street from the city walls and town gardens, the Jardin Garenne.

We drove east from St Evarzec to Carnac, site of three standing stone (menhirs) alignments comprising almost 3000 total stones in 10-11 lines in each of the 3 monuments. These were felt to be outdoor temples, developed ~4500 BC to celebrate some astronomical phenomenon, though probably not the solstices as at Stonehenge. There are also dolmens and cairns or multi-chamber passage graves one of the largest 90 x 30 x 6 meters. The museum, was quite good, but the alignments disappointing as they were fenced off and you couldn't get near them. The national menhirs organization is up in arms that the government has limited access to these sites.

It was only a short 20 km drive eastward to Vannes and our B&B.
Once moved in, we wandered the old city a bit as we made dinner reservations for the next 4 nights at restaurants recommended by our hostess, Christine. Nice quiet dinner (see photo) at La Table de Jeanne then a chilly walk home.

Walked - 5.7 miles

Drove - 136 km
