Retirement Odyssey

Much better night's sleep. Guess we're finally getting used to the new time zone. Weather still cloudy, cool with occasional rain. Tina needs warmer clothes so it's off to Printemps and Monoprix to find a sweater.

Visited the TI again to pick up driving information for "La Route des Anciennes Abbayes" the route we will take on 7/26 from Rouen to Honfleur. Along the way we'll see beautiful abbeys and abbey churches built 1030-1260, some intact/functioning, others in ruins since the French revolution in the early 1800's

Went to Restaurant La Couronne for lunch. It's the oldest continuously operating auberge in France, opened in 1345 !! In 1948 Julia Childs was living in the USA, before she became a famous chef. During a trip to Rouen, she had her first French gourmet meal here. The rest is history! We had a very nice meal..... but neither of us has aspirations to become a chef.

In front of the restaurant is the Place de Vieux Marche where Jean d'Arc was burned at the stake in 1431 at age 19. A church dedicated to her, designed by a Norwegian, was built in 1979 and incorporates sumptuous 16th century stained glass windows salvaged from various churches destroyed by Allied bombings pre-D-Day in 1944.

Made a short visit to the Museum of Fine Art on our way back home for the afternoon R&R period
