Temperatures in the mid to upper 90's (not sure what that is Celsius) for the next 10 days in the towns and villages we will be visiting in Provence. Felt like what we imagine as "Provence" as we sat out in the shade of a street lined by large plane/sycamore trees.
Got an early start today, before it got too hot, with our weekly trip to the laundry. It's only 100 feet down the street from our hotel!! No one there except us and the owner. It was the cleanest, nicest one we've used so far this trip!!
Walked to the famous Arc de Triomphe of Orange again (too dark to see much when we went there last night). It's an amazing structure; lots of carvings, though some have been lost over the years as have the horse and chariots on the top (like at the Brandenburg gate in Berlin)
On the walk back to town, I stopped at and artisanal brewer's shop. He's only open 2 hours a day, because his real job is a vintner! I told him I liked red and brown beer. He said it's too hot to brew anything but yellow/blonde in the summer heat. He asked where I was from. I told him Portland, OR; he was aware of the craft brewing scene there!!
After lunch, we paid a visit to the city museum across the street from the Roman theater. It's in a beautiful 3 story mansion from the late 16th century and includes some nice Roman antiquities including a huge (probably 15-20 feet square) marble slab record of who owned all the land for about 100km around Orange.
There's been an "event" here in Orange for the past two days, continuing tomorrow. Lots of sidewalk sales, strolling musicians, games for kids. The irritating part is that somewhere, there is a guy making almost constant comments about what's offered at various stores, what entertainment is upcoming , etc. He's broadcast REAL LOUD over speakers that are hung everywhere in town!
Went back to the African restaurant and had another good meal. They were much busier on this Saturday night, but treated us like friends, shaking our hands as we left. They wished us well on the rest of our vacation and told us they are going to Benin for vacation the final 2 weeks of September.
