Retirement Odyssey

The weather continues to be beautiful and for the first time, definitely warm enough for shorts and sandals! The drive from Vannes to Anger took 2 hours and was trouble free.

Checked into our hotel. It's nice and in a good location, but you can't beat the home like comforts of a Chambre de Hotes/ B&B like the one we just left in Vannes!

Had lunch in the Jardin de Mail, almost right next to the hotel. Beautiful flowers and a lovely large fountain running in the middle.

Onward to the Chateau d'Angers, built in the 13th century on the site of ancient roman fortifications that were modified and incorporated into the new medieval structure with it's 17 striped towers. These towers used to be crenelated and have "witch's hat " roofs.

The most amazing part of the chateau is the very well displayed tapestry of the Apocalypse, created in just 4 years in the early 14th century. It's based on the story of the Apocalypse as told in the Gospel of John. He appears on the left side of each panel of the tapestry which is 103 feet long with remarkable color and detail.

Dinner at "Pont Pont", facing the castle, recommended by Charlotte, a summer intern at Alliance Francaise in Portland, who lives in Angers.

Strolled home through nearly deserted streets, made all the more appealing by falling temperatures.

Walked - 5.8 miles

Drove - 191 km
