Start of a new month and the E's anniversary. Bright sun, cool temps, sometimes a bit windy , but who can complain!! Started out in Gordes; hairy roads the GPS took us on to get to this hilltop village. Lots of British bike riders at the top.
Lots of restaurants, a castle that wasn't in ruins (but had been turned into the TI and the Hotel de Ville) and a church with a surprising painted interior.
Steep one lane road to the Abbey of Senanque. We didn't know it at the time, but it's one way, so our fears of meeting a tour bus coming down were unnecessary. We arrived after 11:00, so a guided tour was required and they are all in French. I understood quite a bit, but it was tedious for Tina.
Gas was running low and we were told in Russillon that we had to go to Apt to find a "station d'essance." Fortunately, people in Gordes told us there was a small station much closer, just outside Couvillon and that worked just fine as we planned to continue on to Oppede-le-Vieux.
Oppede-le-Vieux is referred to as a "ghost town". It was uninhabited in 1910 and there are still a lot of abandoned, tumble down buldings in town. However, someone has spent a lot of money creating parking with paved walkways into town. It's quite a hike to the church and castle ruins at the top of town, but the church interior is interesting and the views north to Ventoux are great. (Couldn't believe there was to be a wedding in the church tomorrow; the guests better be in great shape to make the climb!!)
Walked - 4.6 miles
Drove - 66 km
