Retirement Odyssey

Turns out our host at the B&B was just a fill in while the usual "manager" was on vacation. He told us all about his family connections to Avignon and Villeneuve. Also told us how French guests are often much less pleasant than those from other countries. We had heard this from another B&B host recently as well.

We were second to the laundry this AM and got everything done w/o delay. Picked up lunch and headed to the Jardin de la Fontaine which is the site of the spring that was the old source of water for Nimes, back in the 6th century BC when the southern Gauls controlled this area, long before the Romans and their aqueduct. Beautiful garden complex, built just 50 years after Versailles, the first public gardens in France built for the populace rather than the aristocracy.

There is also a Roman temple ruin near the spring, built in 26 AD. It's called the Temple of Diana, but experts believe it was really a temple to Augustus OR a Roman library !

Walked along the water course that flows out of the Jardin, then made a stop at the Musee de Vieux Nimes. Most of the exhibits related to the city's importance in the textile trade of the 18-19th centuries, including the "invention" of denim (de- Nimes) clothe and blue jeans ( the dye was bleu-de-genie)

Decided the planned drive through the Canyon de Verdon in 4 days is going to be too "hairy" so we're trying to come up with an alternative plan. It may also be raining that day, spoiling any chance for good views, even for the passenger!

Walked - 5.4 . miles

Drove - zero km
