Retirement Odyssey

Cool and windy this morning! Walked to the ancient history museum. Arrived before opening, so we had our breakfast in the garden that is intended to suggest the Roman Circus that existed here. We learned that a chariot race is 7 laps and that they have a scoreboard in the middle of the race coarse that indicates how many laps have been completed. Also found out that one end of a circus is flat, not rounded, and has spring loaded starting gates for the race.

The museum was great!!, Very modern and extensive with a wonderful English audioguide. I have also been doing fairly well reading the French explanation placards in the few museums we've been to. (Strange that in 7 weeks, we've only been to a few museums. That was our intent; see the countryside and the typical side of city life wherever we go.) The bust of Julius Cesear that was part of the statue in the central arch of the Roman theater looks a lot like Putin!! (see photo)

Seven weeks into our adventure, we decided it was time to get haircuts. Tina found a salon that could fit her in and I found a local walk in barber (female) who was very pleasant to take me on. (61 euros for Tina , 10 euros for me. She says that's very unfair.)

We were last in Arles in 1972 on a hitch hiking trip before we were married. We recall there was a Spanish style bull fight that day and we saw the dead bull pulled through the street behind a pick up truck. Can't recall much more other than being teased by drivers who pretended they were going to pick us up as we tried to leave town..... then pulled away as we approached their cars, laughing.
