We had a very successful and enjoyable day today. The weather was beautiful and the drive went smoothly, despite Saturday in August French vacation traffic.
We traveled from Dinan to Morlaix (the X is silent). Things were very busy as it was the weekly market day. TI was excellent. Morlaix is famous for it's massive railroad viaduct, built 1861-1864. We climbed up to and walked along the lower level as the Paris to Brest TGV rolled by overhead. Had a pleasant walk along the old harbor; beautiful old houses and the huge cigarette factory that closed in the 1930's.
Drove north a bit from Morlaix to the great Cairn of Barnenez, a three tiered passage grave built about 4500 BC, long before the Great Pyramids of Egypt. It was discovered in the 1950's when someone thought they were quarrying natural rock and inadvertently broke into 2 of the 12 passage graves!
Backtracked from the Cairn to Plouezoc'h, a very pretty, little Breton town, where we visited the church of St Etienne, built in the 16th century, known for it's polychrome wood carvings.
Returned to Morlaix then drove north up the west side of the Morlaix estuary to our lovely B&B in Loquenole. Met the owner's dog, Ziggy Stardust (owner was a David Bowie fan), a border collie /black lab shelter dog who is very friendly. Unloaded the car and went to dinner in Carantec, the next town north.
There was a moule festival in full swing there. Hundreds of people at long tables in the town square scarfing down mussels and fries and lots of wine while listening to a band sing sea shanties. Found our restaurant, La Table de Typot, and enjoyed our dinner as the place filled to capacity with locals.
Walked - 7.1 miles
Drove - 198 km
