Semester in Europe!

Our field trip to the Rebibba prison was so interesting! We started out in a classroom with the head of the security division where he explained to us about their procedures. They have a much more open system than in the United States. He explained how their security systems are prepared for high scale issues and breakouts so just a few months ago two prisoners escaped by climbing over a wall using their bed sheets... They never expected something so simple to happen! Thankfully they found the guys and nothing has happened since. As we walked around the grounds it was very interesting because within their corridors, the prisoners are allowed to enter and exit their rooms and walk around socializing. When they had to go to the doctors area or the meal space or go outside, etc they simply get a pass, like a hall pass in elementary school, that gets scanned so they can keep track of everyone's whereabouts. There is no guard escort with handcuffs on like in America. Additionally, they make sure they are able to recurve schooling and job opportunities while in prison. They are all able to work by doing jobs within the prison such as cutting the grass. Also, the food for the meals are prepared by prisoners who are able to cook. They have formed a little reforming community that truly helps the prisoners see a better way of living. After talking to some of them you can truly see how effective their system is in comparison to others around the world. We never once felt unsafe while walking around the same areas that the prisoners do. However, there are separate wings for the terrorist prisoners and the Mafia members who are currently in that prison. Those areas are on high security and we were not allowed to go near those wings. Overall, the field trip was so informative and truly opened our eyes to their systems.
