Semester in Europe!

So today we got to go to the town of Tivoli!!! This is right on the outskirts of Rome and it is where in the Lizzie McGuire movie her and Paulo go at sunset and he first tells her she has to sing in place of Isabella! The villa was built in the 1700s I believe and it has beautiful gardens! The house is at the top of the hill and you're suppose to enter at the bottom, walk through the gardens, then arrive at the house. However, now a days, guests enter at the top of the hill at what would have been the servants entrance. The entrance of the house has a walkway where the roof is decorated in stones from the river. It was absolutely gorgeous. Then inside the villa, each room is painted all over the walls and ceilings. In the corner of each ceiling is the family crest. The house was built by a cardinal. What happened was this Cardinal was a valid option to become the pope (way back when) but he was not chosen so he was given the city of Tivoli instead. He built multiple fountains in the gardens but we only focused on a few. The first one was his idea of "little Rome" this had little replicas of buildings and the fountain was a woman I believe... Then there is a pathway or "street" down to the next fountain and this pathway was where Lizzie and Paulo ran in the movie! The pathway leads to a larger fountain that was beautiful! Next we went to one that when the water runs through the pipes it plays water!! The last fountain that we saw had bull testicles all over it... Interesting. Also, the gardens look over the entirety of Rome and on a clear day you can see the Vatican from it! After we roamed around the grounds and took millions of pictures (pretending to be Lizzie of course) we went and go pizza just outside the villa. We then went and got delicious gelato!! Our next stop in Tivoli was ruins from Hadrian's village from the 2nd century. He had multiple restaurants for each season depending on how the sun was hitting the village. He also had men's and women's baths. What was interesting was, even though he had a wife, he had a 17 year old boyfriend when he was 56. (Ew) and when they were in Egypt the boy mysteriously died. He was so distraught that he built a temple for him along with many statues. Also, the servants had underground tunnels to get around. The architect for this was Syrian and it was the same architect that did the pantheon!! It was all very interesting!! I LOVED it!!! When we got back to Rome I went home and got my stuff together to come spend the night with Sarah. She lives in Prati neighborhood which was a cool change of scenery. We went to a place for appetizers and drinks, which is a very very popular thing to do, then went to an amazing Chinese restaurant for dinner! We then just watched movies with her roommate, Hannah who is from charleston!!
