Wednesday
We awoke to clear blue skies, at last.
I booked tickets to the Cliffs of Moher over breakfast & we set off, our host had said it was about a 55 minute drive, sometimes following the coast, it was a really pretty drive, although annoying that as we got closer the cloud cover increased.
We’d booked the entry before 11am time slot & arrived at 10.43am, it didn’t seem too busy.
We waited for a gap in the clouds to take the most recognisable photo of the cliffs in sunshine & then went for a walk along the cliff tops, taking photos as we went. We didn’t spot any puffins but did see guillemots nesting on the cliff. We then headed along the path past O’Briens tower, currently being renovated, along the cliffs in the other direction, which gives a great view of the Aran Islands, Galway Bay & the Maum Turk Mountains.
The cliffs are 214 metres at their highest point & approximately 8 kms in length. I was amazed at the number of people near the edge, they
were even queuing for a photo near the edge & also a few people laying flat & leaning over taking photos.
We were there about 2 1/2 hours by the time we walked around the visitors centre looking at the displays.
We drove back along the coast, we stopped in Doolin but couldn’t find anywhere suitable so carried on, eventually stopping at the Tea and Garden Rooms in Ballyvaughan, it was perfect, we sat in the conservatory, Richard had Irish Tea & a piece of lemon cake, I had a smoked salmon open sandwich on Guinness bread, with an orange & grapefruit homemade lemonade, which was refreshing although still. I also brought a piece of coffee & walnut cake home to have for afternoon tea which I shared with Richard & was delicious.
On our way home we purchased some bacon & tomatoes, for dinner we had scrambled eggs (our host had left us eggs), grilled bacon & tomatoes & toasted soda bread (which our host had made for us). Delicious.
