Europe

We again woke to blue skies but chilly temperatures, although Richard was excited as it was a top of 19c.
We headed to Old Lyon across both the Rhone & Saône rivers. We took one incorrect turn & ended up in the Place des Terreaux & found the Fontaine Bartholdi, the fountain & square were undergoing extensive renovations but we noticed steam coming out of the horses nostrils, the fountain was made by Frederic Bartholdi in 1888, who also made the Statue of Liberty & would look fantastic with the water & no fencing around. We found the correct route (after a quick check of google maps as I didn’t have a map). In old Lyon we visited Place Saint-Paul, a square with an impressive looking railway station, Elise Saint-Paul, a church that was closed, it’s one of the oldest churches in Lyon & has a mix of Romanesque & Gothic architecture. We then wondered down Rue Juivere (Street of the jews) & into the Place du Change, which used to be where the main activities took place, & then we wondered along Rue Saint-Jean which has a number of Traboules, pathways that link several buildings between roads, these were used widely by the resistance fighters. Lyon has 230 Traboules. We walked into one but only part of it was open & we were looking for others, but they are well hidden!! After stopping for a cafe au lait on place Saint-Jean we went into the Cathedral which was undergoing renovations, constructed in the Gothic style, in the cathedral is a astronomical clock, amazing, installed in 1379, it does strike four times a day & has a singing cockerel & angel Gabriel appears.

We passed through Place de Trinite & past the automaton museum, we also found a puppet theatre before visiting Eglise Saint-George’s.
We then headed “up” towards the theatre Gallo-Romails & a great view across Lyon. We’ve been using a large chimney as a guide, on our 1st night I smelt curry when we walk past but now when I walk past it smells more of mustard. We enjoyed the hazy views of Lyon, we’ve experienced quite a number of hazy views since arriving in Europe & made our way back down the hill towards Place Bellecour & Tourist Information- yay I now have a map!! We purchased a ready made baguette & sandwich from Monoprix & sat next to chocher de charite, in the park to eat them, before heading towards the river & to the huge flower posy statue we’d seen yesterday from the other side of the river. We walked back along the river & turned down Cours Lafayette, I did go into Gallery LaFayette trying to find a new nightie but no luck, we headed into Carrefore & purchased a small piece of pork for roasting & also some whiting, we have sweet potatoes & rice left over from previous meals. I WhatsApp’d Lynne as I’d missed her this morning & she was working from home, she confirmed her Birthday card had arrived, hooray. I was playing around with the editing tool on my iPad this afternoon which is why some of the photos are black & white, I like it!
The roast pork was delicious, Richard had cooked some apple to have with it. It’s starting to cloud over & rain is forecast tomorrow.

Mum sent a WhatsApp message at 8pm telling me that Notre Dame was on fire, how very sad, I was lucky to have visited three times. I was pleased to hear a number of artefacts had been saved & taken to the town hall & that the bell towers & structure had also been saved. I look forward to visiting once the re-build is complete.
