2017 Alaska adventure - Kenai, Alaska to Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, 08.20.2017

The next leg of our trip was Kenai to Anchorage . Our travel day was yet another day of rain. The trip was around 3 hours. We originally planned to stop off at the Alaskan Conservation Center which is a large facility set up for the rehabilitation of animals injured in the wild. Due to the rain, we decided to by-pass this stop.

The campground here is not the best. We back directly onto very active train with a crossing next to the campground. Each time a train comes through (day and night) the train sounds 3 sharp whistles.

There is a black bear that frequently visits the campground. Today, we saw it crossing the road to enter the campground but we didn’t get a picture.

Ironically we were able to meet up with friends from Lake Anna who were also on an Alaskan vacation. Our schedules only allowed an overlap of a couple of hours to have drinks but it was fun meeting up with friends from home.

We visited the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum. This museum is a tribute to Alaskan bush pilots and their planes. The museum sits on the shore of Lake Hood which is the world’s busiest float plane lake. At Lake Hood they use 'float trucks' to move the float planes around on land. The float truck is the front half of a pickup truck - no bed and

no rear axle. The front of the pickup is attached to the float plane trailer rails. Very unusual!
