2017 Alaska adventure - Valdez, Alaska to Seward, Alaska

Seward, Alaska, 08.08.2017

Today we left under cloudy skies for Seward, Alaska. This was a fairly long drive since we had to drive back up along the eastern side of the Chugach mountain range, along the Wrangell mountains, through the Talkeetna Mountains, and then down to Seward. We travelled about 8 hours on this leg. Hopefully that will be the last long travel day. We passed through Anchorage but we did not stop. We will stay in Anchorage for a couple of days on our way from the Kenai Peninsula to Denali.

In many areas of the roads they have installed tall L-shaped posts along the edge of the road. These have been installed to keep the snowplow drivers informed of the edge of the road.

Just outside Anchorage we passed the body of water named Turnagain Arm. Turnagain is known for having one of the world’s remarkably high tides, which a range of more than 33 feet. We passed during low tide so were not able to witness the surge of water known as the bore tide associated with the abrupt rise of water. Beluga whales are also known to pass through this body of water but unfortunately we did not see any.

We saw one moose just before arriving in Seward.
