2017 Alaska adventure - Homer, Alaska Day 1

Homer, Alaska, 08.12.2017

Homer is such a pretty town. The people are extremely friendly and just seem to be happy to live here.

Today we had beautiful weather. It was warm in the morning and early afternoon with temperatures in the mid 60s. We were supposed to get rain around 5 but it just became windy and chilly. We had a great day getting to know Homer. We started out taking a long walk through the main town of Homer and watching sea planes take off from Beluga lake, we stopped in a local bakery that served delicious pastries. After having huge sticky buns we headed back to the trailer to get ready to go to Homer Spit.

The Spit is the remains of an ancient glacial moraine. The Spit is 4.5 miles long and has been reinforced with rock walls to prevent it from being washed away from the winter storms. We had a lot of fun stopping in the unique shops, fish shops, and charter companies along the Spit. We stopped by the Seafarers Memorial which is a reminder of the lives from Homer lost at sea since 1934. We also purchased fish bait from a vending machine!

Kachemak Bay is another bay with very high tides. I have included pictures of the beach at low tide and the same spot at high tide. During low tide, people go out to look for starfish and other sea creatures. We watched lots of dogs and their owners enjoying the low tide as well.

On our way back to the campground we stopped by the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon (known locally as “The Fishing Hole”) to watch the fisherman trying their luck at catching salmon.

It was another great day in Alaska.
