2017 Alaska adventure - Homer, Alaska to Kenai, Alaska

Kenai, Alaska, 08.17.2017

We spent 2 days in Kenai. The trip from Homer to Kenai was only a couple of hours and uneventful . Kenai is small town mainly known for salmon fishing along the Kenai River. Kenai is the home of the first Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska built in 1895.

The campground that we stayed at had unique layouts. They had sections of square grassy lawns and trailers would park one of each side of the square. There was a large iron fire ring in the center of the square. Unfortunately during the time of our stay it was rainy or misty so we were not able to take advantage of a fire. The owners of the property built several facades on their check in building to mimic buildings in an old town. They clearly wanted to make their campground memorable. The campground backed onto grasslands frequented by caribou. There is a herd of 4 or 5 that live in the woods near the campground but we only saw one buck.

One day we headed east of Kenai to hike a trail near the confluence of the Kenai and Russian rivers. It was a drizzly day but we enjoyed hiking to Lower Russian Lake and watching the salmon making their way up the river to their spawning pools.

On our last day in Kenai the guys went with a guide on the Kenai to fish for salmon. They were successful in catching silver, sockeye, and trout.

Kenai is our last stop on the Kenai Peninsula.
