2017 Alaska adventure - Wisconsin to South Dakota

Salem, South Dakota, 07.13.2017

Thursday 7/13/17 we left West Salem, Wisconsin and drove through Minnesota stopping in Salem, South Dakota. Salem is between Sioux Falls and Mitchell. For those unaware, Mitchell is known for the world’s only consistently running Corn Palace. Today the Corn Palace is a popular venue for concerts, rodeos, and other public events. Each year the interior and exterior are decorated with scenes created totally by ears of corn. They use various types of corn in varying colors. Although there were no events going on, we marveled at the artistry. In fact walking up to the building none of us could believe that the murals were made of corn.
We stayed in a small campground surrounded by farms. The campsites were spacious but very aromatic – needless to say we had to keep the trailer windows closed and kept the air conditioning on.
