2017 Alaska adventure - Valdez Day 1

Valdez, Alaska, 08.06.2017

We started off today with a wonderful experience. One of the glacier charter companies donates the use of their boat on Sunday mornings for a church service in the Valdez harbor. They have been partnering with the local Baptist church since 1990. This is the most unique place that any of us have attended Sunday service.

After the service and breakfast at the great little restaurant, we headed out to the other side of the harbor so that the guys could do some salmon fishing from shore. The silver salmon were running in the greatest amounts in 10 years. The guys had a great time easily catching their limit of 6 salmon each. A local man filets fish for $1 per fish. So he fileted our 20 lbs of salmon. We saw several sea lions in the harbor as well.

The Gold Rush Days celebrations today were a hometown parade followed by a hot dog and hamburger barbecue. The parade was enjoyable and included kid from the high school, cub scouts, etc. The barbecue was free and held by the harbor. We enjoyed both events.

The wildlife at our campground are stellar blue jays and domestic rabbits. The stellar blue jays are huge in comparison to the blue jays on the east coast. They love to eat peanuts in the shells. The domestic rabbits are a result of a family purchasing two domestic rabbits and then releasing them. The town now has domestic rabbits

all over.
Tomorrow we will remain in Valdez.
