2017 Alaska adventure - Banff National Park, British Columbia, Canada

Johnston Canyon, 07.27.2017

Today was a sightseeing and hiking day. We travelled along the Trans-Canadian highway to Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park. At the Canyon us and what seemed like 1,000 other tourists took a 9 mile hike up past several waterfalls, through alpine forests and finally to an area called the Inkpots. The hike up to the various levels of the waterfalls was good. The hiking beyond up to the Inkpots was fairly steep and strenuous. We hiked to the highest point only to find that we had to now descend to the inkpots. The inkpots are ponds of water that get their name from the bright blue-green water that bubbles up from natural springs deep inside the mountains. The inkpots were very pretty, but not sure that they were worth the steep hike. The waterfalls on the other hand were magnificent. All in all it was a great day for hiking. Don’t think we will do any strenuous hiking tomorrow. Don’t think our feet and legs will be able to take it.
