Calgary to San Francisco
We left Salinas this morning heading for Carmel via Walmart. The WiFi in there was fantastic so while Rachel shopped I uploaded photos! At Carmel we got on the State Route 1 to travel the Big Sur to San Simeon. The road follows the coastline twisting and turning through numerous state parks, over bridges that scale canyons and along rugged cliffs with fantastic views of the ocean far below. It took a few hours to drive down as we kept stopping to look at the views. As we neared the end we stopped to look at the elephant seals on the beach at Piedras Blancas. In the open ocean eight to ten months of the year, they come ashore twice a year – in the winter for the pupping and mating season, and in the late spring and early summer to molt and grow new fur. Juveniles, not participating in the pupping and mating season, come ashore for a month during the September to December period. After we had parked at the campground we had a walk to the beach where the girls paddled in the ocean.
