Calgary to San Francisco

Today we went to Monterey for the day. We started at the beach where Evie and Lola went on the beach for a short while. We then walked along the seafront to Cannery Row. Monterey was once well known for its sardine packing industry and the remains of canneries can be seen along the shore. Cannery Row Street was named in honour of John Steinbeck who came from the area and wrote a novel of the same name. As we walked along the road we spotted a whale swimming just off shore. There were lots of shops to look in and it was quite nice just wandering around. We went back to the RV for lunch and then the girls went back on the beach and in the sea. The bay is part of the National Marine Sanctuary. We saw a few scuba divers going into the sea and there is an underwater canyon, the largest and deepest off the Pacific Coast of North America. We saw sea otters swimming around and went down the harbour pier where there were lots of sea lions. We then caught the little trolley bus to the historic Fisherman’s Wharf and had a look round the shops there before going back to the RV and back to Salinas where the girls went for a quick swim before bed.
