Calgary to San Francisco

An early pickup this morning for a minibus tour to Mount Rainier National Park. It was very cloudy when we set off and we wondered if we would get to see the mountain as on average it can only be seen a third of the time. At 4392m high it is the tallest volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range and the most glaciated peak in the US having 26 major glaciers. It also experiences the heaviest snowfall in the world. It was still cloudy and misty when we arrived so we couldn’t see the mountain at all . The mist cleared enough for us to see the Nisqually Range as we drove round the lower part of the park. We stopped for a walk through the woods looking at the different species and we stopped to view two waterfalls before arriving at Paradise visitor centre. There are many trails to walk and meadows full of wildflowers. Although it was a little early in the season to get the full effect of the flowers they were beginning to appear and I saw a good variety. I walked along one of the trails to view another waterfall before a quick lunch and a drive further round the park. The clouds were starting to disappear and the sun came out enough for us to get a glimpse of Mount Rainier and away in the distance Mount Adams, another volcano in the Cascade Range. We viewed more waterfalls from short trails and then as we drove out we got a magnificent view of the mountain.
