Calgary to San Francisco

Today I drove along part of the Hell’s Canyon Scenic Byway from Joseph to Baker City. It goes through the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest where the whole area is covered with fir trees sometimes way above you and then way below. Part way along the road is Hell’s Canyon outlook where suddenly you drive out of forests to see the canyon. The canyon is the deepest canyon in North America and is stunning being more than a mile deep and ten miles wide. I intended to travel along the bottom of the canyon but poor signage and a wrong turn meant I drove along Oxbrow Dam instead just into Idaho! However it was very beautiful and I had to go a fair distance before being able to turn round. I decided not to bother with the canyon and made my way to Baker City. I stopped at the Oregon Trail site where you can see the ruts made by the wagon trains on their long journey west. Baker City came into being in 1861 during the gold rush and many of the buildings date from the late 1800’s.
