Calgary to San Francisco

Today we set off to drive all the way round Lake Tahoe. The lake is 22miles long and 12 miles wide and is North America’s largest alpine lake with water that is 99% pure. The altitude is 6,225ft above sea level and the drive round the lake is 72 miles with the California / Nevada state line bisecting it. We had a map with points of interest on it so we knew where to stop. Our first stop was the Tallac Historic site. At the turn of the century Lake Tahoe was the favorite getaway for Northern California’s successful and wealthy entrepreneurs. Glamorous parties, summertime festivities and beach-side recreation provided the perfect escape from city living and three wealthy families built their summer estates here. A hotel and casino were also built and it was branded ‘The greatest resort in the world’. Some of the buildings remain and we looked round the museum which is housed in an original log cabin. From there we drove to Inspiration Point where beautiful views of Emerald Bay, way below you can be seen. Our next call was for lunch at quirky West Shore Pizza in Tahoma. We then carried on to Kings Beach at the north end of the lake so that the girls could go in the water. They had a wonderful time although the water was very cold. We then moved on to Crystal Bay with its casinos, one of which was once owned by Frank Sinatra. Now in Nevada we carried on around the northern end and down the east side with many beautiful views of the lake and mountains. We crossed back over to California at Heavenly, another resort with casinos, and arrived back at our hotel to relax for the evening.
