Calgary to San Francisco

We left Lake Lopez this morning to move on to Santa Barbara. Our first stop was Arroyo Grande, a small Victorian town on the coast road. The shops specialise in vintage goods, there is an old swing bridge and there is a Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab in one of the old buildings where Lola and Evie had an ice cream. We then made a short detour back to Pismo Beach for Lola’s donut fix. She had read about Surfside Donuts before her holidays and it was on the list of things to do. It is only open until 1pm so was closed when we were there before. There was a good selection and they were delicious. We got back on the coast road and headed south before making another detour, this time to see the city of Solvang. It was founded in 1911 by a group of Danes who wanted to establish a Danish colony far from the midwestern winters. The architecture of the city reflects Danish style, there are four windmills and streets and squares are named after Danish places. There is a statue of Hans Christian Andersen, a copy of the Little Mermaid statue and a replica of Copenhagen’s round tower. There are lots of bakeries, restaurants and shops offering a taste of Denmark. To keep tourists coming an open air theatre was built in 1971 incorporating Elizabethan and Danish styles. After driving past Lake Cachuma and Los Padres National Forest, the San Marcos Pass and numerous vineyards we finally ended our journey in Santa Barbara.
