Calgary to San Francisco

This morning Lola, Evie and Rachel went swimming in the water hole at our campground. It was very cold but they took their inflatables and had a good time. We were supposed to go to Yosemite but because of the nearby fires it was closed. Instead we went on the Sugar Pine Railroad. Max Stauffer reconstructed this attraction in 1961 laying 4 mile of track on the route of the old Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company. Two old steam engines are used to pull the carriages along and As we travelled along our guide told us about the history of the Lumber company founded in 1874. There was 140 mile of track along the Sierra Nevadas used for the movement of timber. It was taken to the saw mill in Sugar Pine and then a 54 mile flume carried it to Madera. The company closed in 1931 because of the Great Depression and a lack of trees surrounding the track. The Stauffer family still own the Sugar Pine Railroad. We then set off for the long journey back over towards Newark.
