Calgary to San Francisco

After much deliberation this morning on how to cross the Golden Gate Bridge it was decided we would hire bikes and cycle over. As I’ve not ridden a bike for over 30 years and Evie has not had much practice it was with some trepidation that we went to the hire shop. We did call for a nice breakfast of waffles / bagels on the way though and saw a cable car parked where we could take pictures. I decided on an electric bike, Scott and Lola had a child tandem with Lola on a lower seat at the front and Rachel and Evie had a bike with a tag along so Evie was at the back. We had to practise before setting off but finally got on our way. It took a while for us to become confident but the first part was on level ground. The hills were more of a problem. I was ok until I had to stop for other people then found it hard to get going again. Rachel and Scott walked up most off them. Going over the bridge was chaotic as there were so many people. Bikes were going both ways and lots of pedestrians sharing the space who sometimes were totally oblivious of cyclists. Everyone wanted to stop and take photos although it was very foggy so we were glad to get to Sausalito on the other side where it was beautifully sunny. We all had wobbly legs so went for lunch and a drink. We then had a look round the shops before catching the ferry back sailing past Alcatraz on the way. A ride back to the hire shop nearly finished us off but we made it! We are all tired and stiff but I’m sure we will be raring to go tomorrow.
