Woke up to fairly heavy rain this morning. Wasn't too sure how it was going to be to drive through but luckily as we got further on, the weather started to clear more.
We followed a lot of the original old Route 66 today. It meant a lot of small towns and pot-holed roads but it was fun. Headed out from El Reno to be able to cross the "camel-back" bridge. It was really long with a series of humped side railings. Lots of photos out the car windows as it was too damp to get out and take them. I may have gotten a little excited at seeing my first live skunk today. Unfortunately none of the boys saw it so I think they reckon I was crazy, but I really did see one.
Following the Route 66 we came across an Air and Space Museum at Weatherford. Considering the weather it seemed as good a time as any to go in and check it out. Really well set out with lots of genuine artifacts and lots of replicas too. The boys found it quite interesting (it helped that a lot of things had buttons to press and make things happen.)
Again, following the old Route 66 we came across the Clinton Route 66 Museum. Loved how this place was set out. It was done in decades showing how Route 66 developed over time up to the 1960's/70's. Each decade had photos from the era and you could follow the 'story' of a family who moved west along the highway.
Also came across the "Cherokee Trading Post" along the way. We stopped because part of the draw card was 'real' buffalo and Texan longhorns, but the longhorns were out the back somewhere and the poor buffalo (bison) was curled up in its dinky little shed trying to stay warm. We couldn't be bothered dodging rain drops to go and find them so headed into the store instead. Lots of Route 66 souvenirs and Indian souvenirs. Also a lot of boots here. If only I had unlimited funds!
Pushed on to Amarillo and the weather seemed to improve as we got closer. Found our hotel and decided to take a short wander to the shopping centre next door. Discovered Burlingtons. Dangerous place. Way too easy to buy up big! Clothes were so cheap and a lot was brand name stuff.
Decided to spend a quiet evening in our hotel room seeing it had been a big day of travelling. (realised the next day that we'd missed the Barbed Wire Museum as we'd got onto the Interstate to save a little time)
Boys were ecstatic to discover the hotel had board games that could be borrowed so they played Monopoly for the evening.
