The Smith's USA Trip

We had to be up a little earlier this morning to make it down to the French Quarter for the Walking Culinary and History tour we'd booked in for. The boys found it a bit boring as it didn't really mean that much to them, but Craig and I both found it interesting to find out so much about the history of the area and to learn more about the food from the area too. Knowing the influence of the French, Spanish and Africans is pretty cool.
Some of the foods we learned about included: beignets, moufoulettes, po-boys, gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish and more. Craig's been making an effort to try different beers and is finding it rather hit and miss on the tastes stakes. (haha!!)
After the tour we checked out the French Market (pretty much like the Vic Markets really) before trying our first po boys for lunch. Thank goodness we shared two between the four of us! VERY big (but yummy). Reality is, they're a bread roll made in a French breadstick.
From there we wandered back towards our hotel and visited the Audubon Insectarium and Butterfly house. The boys got a bit more of a kick out of this place and it was really well set up.
Back to the hotel for a rest and then the rain set in. We dashed next door to a restaurant called Mother's with traditional Cajun style foods.
I can now officially say that I've tried Jambalaya and Gumbo. They're pretty good.
Early night.
