The Smith's USA Trip

We decided to break our zoo visits by going down to see the Maritime Museum today. Finding the roads here more nightmarish than anywhere else we've been - perhaps reminiscent of Nashville!
It's apparently that time of year when they have their 'marine layer' - the mist that comes in from the ocean and hangs there all day. Has made for a very overcast (though still hot) time.
The Maritime Museum was quite cool. They have a number of different types of boats and ships permanently moored there, along with two submarines (one Russian, one American) and you can walk through all of them to see what they're like. The boys found it intriguing and particularly loved that they were able to go through the subs. I think Kaine just loved that he could beat us all through because he fitted easily through the port hole type doors!
There was also a really huge ferry, named the Berkley that was originally used in the early 1900's to ferry passengers across the San Francisco bay. Apparently it carried 1000 plus passengers. The inside upstairs was just beautiful, wooden and tiled floors and beautiful stained glass windows.
It was a lunch of fish and chips on the pier before we wandered further up and took the tour of the USS Midway - a massive air carrier ship.
This was actually pretty cool to go and see the different areas of the ship as well as go up the top and check out 20 odd different aircraft, all of which have at some stage been used on the Midway.
The boys got their "Junior Wings" while we were there so they were both pretty happy with that. We did cut our tour a little short as we had to be back to the car by a certain time.
A good day out though seeing something different.
