We started this morning by heading back up to part of the Old Route 66 strip in Amarillo to get pictures of the old business signs. There are so many of these to see and it represents so much of what has been lost.
Followed Route 66 out of Amarillo and straight to the Cadillac Ranch. So very, very wet here. I didn't venture all the way around the cars as it was just too muddy for me but Craig and the boys made their way around. (Craig tried to carry Blake across the worst of the mud, this of course did not end well. One very muddy son.)
From there it was on to Vega where we found one of the Route 66 'ends'. It literally just finishes and has a sign that says "Route 66 End". Turned around and back onto the Interstate and took more exits to small towns. It was because of this we managed to come across Adrian which was the midpoint of Route 66.
It's interesting to see how the landscape is starting to change from green and grassy to drier and much sparser vegetation.
We took Exit 0 (yes, zero) to visit the ghost town of Glen Rio on the Texas, New Mexico border. Strange little place.

Literally just the shells of old businesses left there now and apparently one lady still lives there alone.
Craig was determined to head down the short stretch of dirt Route 66 (18 miles), I was a little hesitant due to the weather that had been happening around us but it turned out to be quite dry to drive on. Got some good pictures of some of the wild flowers. Bonus of a dirt road means that very few people had bothered to drive down it so it was easy to stop.
Stopped in Tucumcari for lunch. Quaint place - a lot more old businesses and signs.
New Mexico is rugged but pretty. The weather changed again on the way into Santa Fe, going from warm to fairly chilly quickly. Thought it was going to be warm here but there is snow on the mountains just above. Eek!
