The Smith's USA Trip

We left Fort Worth and headed out towards the South west on our way to Austin. We stopped along the way at Glen Rose to visit Dinosaur World and the boys really enjoyed it. Lots of "life-sized" statues of dinosaurs in a really well set up Park. The boys got to have a go at digging for fossils and uncovering a stegasaurus skeleton which they enjoyed. (The skeleton wasn't real but they still had fun).
From there we headed further south and found a small town called Hico. We stopped here for lunch and tried our first American style sandwich. Couldn't believe the size of them but they tasted pretty good. Checked out a little of Hico. Lots of history to be seen including their last log cabin, an historical fountain that was made to enable people, horses and dogs to drink together. This was also the home town of the Billy the Kid museum. Interesting stuff to see though the boys were a little bored.
From there we headed South and back East to Austin. It was meant to be a 2 hour trip but thanks to some major roadworks it took us nearly three.
We got into Austin about tea time, right at the same time a thunderstorm hit but it was still really mild temperature wise. Managed to find a little Tex-Mex Cantina about 2 blocks away for tea - YUM!
Highlights of the day included seeing our first squirrel in the wild. We also saw an opossum, two skunks and an armadillo but seeing how they were all squished on the road I don't think we can really count them on our list of sights.
Can't get over the size of their Ranch gates and their toilets are just weird. Craig is dealing with the driving a lot better already.
After Austin we headed down to San Antonio. Only about an hour and a half drive so we made a stop at San Marcos. Interesting town. Beautiful river running through it that was amazingly clear. We wandered around the town, checked out the Hays County Courtyard. Some interesting history about the area. Found a museum of collectible cars so of course had to head there for Craig. Was actually pretty impressive the range of cars they had and the condition they were in.
From San Marcos we headed down to San Antonio. We hadn't realised when we organized our trip but it's currently "Fiesta" time in San Antonio so there are all sorts of things happening. It also means that it's crazy busy with people but I've got to say this is a gorgeous city.
We spent our afternoon at a carnival and then walked to The Alamo. Beautiful place. Unfortunately it was crazy busy but we still got to wander throught it and see the place I've heard about so many times before. A quiet evening with a short stroll down the riverwalk back to our hotel. Feeling very relaxed.
