The Smith's USA Trip

We slept in a little this morning which was probably a good thing. Think we all needed to catch up on some sleep.
Piled into the car and headed into the Rocky Mountains to take a train ride on an old historical section of railway there. It was a beautiful little ride up the mountainside and then back down again. On the way back down we got off at the Lebanon Mine stop and were taken on a small guided tour of the Everett Mine, used to mine silver back in the late 1800's. The tour was really well done, they had a man in period dress who was the mine manager and he 'introduced' us to the job.
Amazing to hear the details they could share such as the fact that when they began mining they knew they needed to go 1200 feet into the mountainside to get to what they were after. They managed this by blasting and mining out around 8 feet of tunnel a day.
They showed the tools used back then and how they were used, including the 'widowmaker' - the first mechanical jack ever used. It was very well known for taking the lives of those who were brave enough to use it, making the extra 75 cents a day you earned for working it pretty much pointless.
Just as we got back on the train to head down to Georgetown again it started to pour with rain - a little bit of a problem considering that a number of the cars on the train are open!
A cool, damp finish to the afternoon.
