We had always planned to take a day trip from Vegas out to see the Hoover Dam and then on to the West Rim of the Grand Canyon and do the SkyWalk so today was it because we were out of time.
Blake and Craig wanted to have a 'fancy' car but we ended up with a Dodge Charger (or a Challenger - either way it was a Dodge). To be perfectly honest, I found it less comfortable and not as nice as the Ford Edge we'd been driving when we got to Vegas!
First stop was the Hoover Dam. Hot and busy would be the initial reaction. When we walked across and looked down, wow, is it a long way to the water. Great to say that we've been there and walked over. I did make the mistake of connecting the boys to the Hoover Dam by referring to its appearance in the first Transformers movie. For the rest of the time we were there that was all they could talk about. So much for the history and importance of the place etc. One thing that we couldn't get over was the size of the fish we could see down against the dam wall and on the edge of the dam. Wow. If they were that big from that distance, they must have been monsters up close!
We got into the car and thought we'd be clever and head east over the bridge so that we could say we've driven over it too and then keep heading for the SkyWalk. Um. Oops. When you get to the eastern side you do a loop and come back over it again. Oh well. We've now driven over the Hoover Dam in BOTH directions.
It was a long drive (on roads that were, well questionable I would say) out to the Sky Walk. Again, the speed limits are...well, ignored is the easiest way to explain it. Once we were past the town of Donolo Springs speed limits were 45 and then 55 miles on the signs but cars were blasting past us like we were standing still. More concerning was the fact that several passed at those speeds in No Passing Zones.
Finally got out there and discover that you can't drive to the Sky Walk. You park and they then bus you out. After charging $43 per person PLUS $30 per person to go out on the SkyWalk. Needless to say Craig and I were pretty unimpressed with that scenario.
The first stop of the bus is at an Indian 'Ranch'. We took a quick look - one of the workers put me in jail for bringing a 'Canon' onto their property which the boys found hilarious. Back on the bus and then down to the SkyWalk. Thankfully it wasn't all that busy when we got there so it was straight out onto the walk. A little daunting stepping out onto the glass but not as bad as I expected to be honest. Some quick photos taken (again they sting you for these, you're not allowed to carry any cameras or phones out onto the walk way).
Back on the bus and hauled it back to Vegas.
When we dropped off the car at the rental place we decided to catch a taxi back to M&M World at the bottom of the strip. The taxi driver was awesome! She stopped at the Welcome to Vegas sign for us and we got some pictures there and then the whole way down to our drop off she advised us on where to go, what to do and see and all things that she thought the whole family would enjoy. Pity we hadn't come across her earlier in our Vegas time!
M&M World is huge! Four floors of M&M merchandise and Red was wandering around on the 4th floor next to the NASCAR so we all got our photo with him.
Late dinner and then back to the hotel with plans of an early(ish) night because we fly out tomorrow!
