Sleep was a bit of a novelty for us in Dallas. Apparently our systems were not prepared to deal with a flight and then night again. After several hours of being awake in the middle of the night we ended up sleeping in a little, nearly missing breakfast. A quick bite to eat and then we were on the road and headed for Fort Worth.
Considering the sleep in and how we were finding our way, we were lucky to arrive in Fort Worth just a little after 11 in the morning. Perfect timing really as the first "cattle drive" of the day started at 11.30. We stood along the side of the road with all the other tourists and watched as a 'herd' (about 15 or 20 cattle) of Texas Longhorns meandered about 100 meters down the road and into a grass pen, waiting to turn around and do the return trip at 4 in the afternoon. The poor things were so used to doing it that they just plodded on down, oblivious to the people watching them. For us, the 'drive' was nothing particularly special but far out those horns are big and nasty looking! Guess that's not surprising with a span of three to four feet. They even had two longhorns saddled up and tied to the fence for about an hour either side of the drive for people to climb onto and get photos, for the bargain price of $5 per person. We didn't bother.
We spent the rest of the day wandering around the Stock yards where there were lots of little shops with souvenirs. The boys were right into getting some ASAP but we managed to mostly contain them. (Though Kaine now has a new pair of boots and Craig has his first hat - Blake is just bitterly disappointed he didn't get a hat, boots or wallet, each of which he has been told he can get on this trip, despite the fact we're here for nearly 70 more days! )
Whilst it's only been one day, we've so far avoided the food dilemmas we were so warned about. Lunch at Riscky's BBQ in the Stockyards was good and dinner at The Rig steak house in Fort Worth (a short walk from our hotel) was yum with a fresh salad bar to choose from. Despite being warned I've still been shocked by the size of meals, but even more by the size of the drinks they serve.
Tomorrow is on to Austin for a night.
