We spent a lovely day in Santorini before our 5:00 pm ferry to our final destination...Crete.
We packed up and checked out of our rooms first thing this morning, but of course, Basil allowed us to have full use of the hotel until he drove us to the ferry at 4:00 pm. When Pete and Jim went to check out and pay for our rooms, Basil insisted Pete and I pay the same as Jim and Kelley even though we had booked a "more deluxe" room. Pete showed Basil the confirmation e-mail with the price quoted from Booking.com, but he said "No, you only pay for a 2 person room!" OK...fine! More shopping money for this Mama!
After all that commotion, Basil drove us to town, so we could have one more breakfast at Mama's Place. She scolded us thoroughly after breakfast, and told us to stay out of the heat and drink plenty of water today! We sure got a kick out of Mama...she was definitely your stereotypical Greek lady!
We walked the 20 minutes back to Basil's place and plunked ourselves poolside for a few hours. Mama was right...it was sure a hot one today! The high was close to 40 degrees!
It was very hot waiting for the ferry to arrive at the port, so the men enjoyed a cold beer. The beer they have enjoyed the most in Greece is called "Mythos" and we found out in Santorini that it is made by the Boutari Winery! No wonder they like it so much! (Photos 1 and 2 - PS: I am not actually drinking the beer...only holding it!!)
We decided to stay inside on the ferry today as it was just too hot to be outside on the deck! We were on a "superfast" ferry today, so the inside seats were like airplane seats - very comfy too! We enjoyed the dinner we brought with us, pizza and wine! I also took a photo of the immense wake coming off the back of the ferry. The amount of water and spray was unbelievable! (photo #3)
We had transportation booked for our arrival in Crete. The town of Rethymno, where we will be staying for the next 6 nights, is about an hour's drive west of where the ferry port is, so we were happy to have a nice air conditioned van ride to hotel. We had a photo stop along the way, where we enjoyed the beautiful view of Panormos, Crete. (Photo #4)
Our ride to Rethymno was spectacular, so we are all looking forward to exploring this beautiful island over the next 6 days! Hope you enjoy our final leg of this amazing trip with us!
