After a lovely breakfast in our room, we set out into the sweltering heat to make our way to the old town of Rhethymno. (Photo 1 - today's breakfast..in our room as it was too hot to eat on the balcony!!)
The walk was farther than we expected, but we found a lovely wine shop where we stopped and had several samples! Thank you to our new friend, Fanourios at "Bazaar Cretan Products"! We even got to sample the famous Crete Raki! I would compare it to American Everclear! Yikes (Photo #2 is our Cheers or "Yamas" in Greek with Fanourios). Photo #3 is the beautiful harbor at the old town of Rethymno.
After wandering around the quaint little streets of the old town, we found a lovely taverna to enjoy a cold glass of white wine and some lunch! Photo #4 is Pete having our new favorite Greek meal - Feta stuffed beef burger (drenched with lemon) with Naxos Potatoes! OMG...it may sound weird, but they are so tasty!! Even my burps for several hours following the meal were amazing!!
Well 3 hours later we were still at the taverna...and we had new British friends as well as all the plans made for Jim and Kelley's 29th anniversary on Sunday! As a complete bonus, one of the Brits is actually named "Dave!" (Our friends from the cruise told us that everyone from Britain is named "Dave"...and now, we truly believe him!!) We can't wait for Sunday night's dinner with Dave, Keith and sisters Pauline and Neil. (Photo #5) The taverna owner says he will have lamb for Jim and Greek music and dancing!! There should be some really fun photos to follow! I'm also excited to be the Maid of Honor at a Greek wedding!!
After a taxi ride back to our hotel and a quick stop at the grocery store, we're making taco's tonight in our little kitchen! Sad to say, but Pete and I are dying for some Mexican food!
I also found a new kitty cat to adopt. I've named her "Naxi"...after my favorite island, Naxos. Now, if I can only figure out a way to smuggle her home! (Photo #6)
Photo # 7 is the beautiful sunset we enjoyed tonight with a glass (or 2) of wine! Tomorrow...we are renting a car to explore the island! This should be fun!!
