Yamas!

After enjoying breakfast together and a glass of sparkling wine to toast Jim and Kelley's 29th Anniversary, we hit the road to drive to the south side of Crete.

The drive to the seaside community of Plakias Beach is only 1 hour from Rethymno, and we all enjoyed the leisurely Sunday drive through the countryside. (Photo 1) As we approached the gorge of Kotsifou, the sites were just amazing! (Photos 2 & 3) We pulled over at a little church built right into the mountainside and had some beautiful photo opportunities.

We also had the chance to take a photo of a "model chapel" that we have been seeing all through the roadsides of Greece. (Photo #4) Each little chapel is unique and different, but they all share the same purpose– to ultimately provide a passing traveler with a moment of rest and spiritual reflection. There is always water, olive oil and a candle in each one to aide a traveler in need!

Photos 5 and 6 are at the mountainside chapel including one of our anniversary couple sharing a moment at the chapel!

We made our drive down to the sea, and quickly changed into our bathing suits and had a swim! (Photo #7) It's another hot day here, with temperatures around 40 degrees! Following our swim, we had lunch at Sifi's Taverna, where Pete and I finally had a Gyro Pita! We have wanted to try one, and had yet to sample its deliciousness! Once we saw Sifi placing the pork onto the Gyro spit (the one he was making was for tonight's dinner as it takes quite a few hours to roast!)...we couldn't resist! (Photos 8 and 9)

We are quite accustomed to finishing our meals in Greece with a plate of watermelon or honey dew! Today was no exception! Yum!! (Photo # 10)

Well, we're ready to make our way to Minares Garden Tavern to meet our new UK friends to celebrate Jim and Kelley's anniversary! Opa....stay tuned tomorrow for more great photos (and stories!)
