US Trip 2018

Adrian worked again today, so we went with Mary and the kids to the Huntington Gardens, about 30 miles away from their house. The gardens are very large with sections devoted to plants of different regions and varieties. We visited the Desert, Rose, Japanese, Jungle, Palm and Australian gardens. Damien got some really great photos of some of the plants, birds and other animals we saw there.

The kids began to fade so we had lunch at the cafe there and then headed back home.

Mary mentioned earlier in the day that a friend was having a bake sale tomorrow and that she wanted to contribute something. Nadia offered to make a lemon and coconut slice that has always been really popular. So while Mary cleaned up around the house, Nadia put her slice together.

We then started to get ready to go out for dinner, as a final farewell. The babysitter for Miranda and Jude arrived, and after giving her the tour and having a chat about the evening, we headed out with Mary to pick Adrian up from work and drive downtown.

The evening started at a new bar called Nomad which is located in an old bank. It was a really nice bar and the staff were very skilled at making creative and delicious cocktails. From there we took an Uber the 5 minutes to an Indian restaurant called Badmaash. The menu was small but all of the food sounded really interesting. We chose a selection of dishes to share. Everything was absolutely delicious. The food was incredibly fresh and the spices were perfectly balanced.

After dinner we went to the Edison bar, a "speakeasy" located in an alley around the corner from the restaurant. It had a really cool 1920's vibe with silent movies playing on big screens and some of the patrons even dressing up in flapper and gangster costumes. One of the waitresses was dressed at Tinkerbelle, complete with light-up wings! We had another delicious cocktail at this bar and then took another Uber back to Mary's car to drive home.

It was a really lovely way to spend our last evening in the US.
