US Trip 2018

We headed out on the trail of more waterfalls. We started at Cummins Falls which we knew would be crowded on a long weekend because it's always a popular watering hole and the weather was really warm. The carpark was filling up but we walked down to the falls and it was a really lovely sight. The track led further down to the foot of the falls so we walked along the water's edge before it became obvious that we were going to have to get wet. So Nadia, who didn't have the right shoes for the job, stayed behind and Damien continued ahead. He took some great photos and then we headed back up the track. It was obvious that the river was going to get even busier with the number of cars in the car park.

From there we headed to Big South Fork. By this stage the weather had changed and it was raining but by the time we got the trail head it had eased off. The information that we could find about the waterfall was unclear, but we headed down a trail toward an overlook. The trail was a bit wet but took us through some lovely forest, with pretty wildflowers and other interesting plants. The overlook didn't allow us to see a waterfall but it was still lovely.

After a quick lunch we crossed the border from Tennessee to Kentucky to visit Cumberland Falls. This was also a very popular spot with a well planned and easy to walk track. The fall itself is very large and there were plenty of spots to view the falls and take photos. We continued further down the trail to a small beach-like spot at the bottom of the falls. Damien again felt like being a bit of a mountain goat so Nadia waited at the beach for Damien to take more photos further along. When he returned, we headed back to the car and headed out to the main road to find a place to stay for the night.

We found a hotel in Lexington, about 80 miles from Cumberland Falls. We started out for the hotel but didn't get very far before we spotted a billboard on the highway. We were only a few miles from Sanders Cafe - the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken! It went without saying that we had to go and take a look. To quote Damien "this is the highlight of my holiday so far"! (Only half joking) So we got there, got a photo out the front for posterity and then headed back to the highway to continue our journey to Lexington.
