US Trip 2018

We all had a bit of a sleep-in this morning, then had a quick breakfast, packed our things and made sure the house was in order before leaving by mid-morning.

The Vallis' flights were not until 5pm today so we had a good part of the day to spend before they needed to be at the airport.

We headed to Mt Tabor first, an extinct volcano which has now been developed into a nature reserve with several walking paths, sports grounds and playgrounds. We followed a not very well signed path around the perimeter of the park which gave us opportunities to take some lovely shots of the views around Portland.

We then drove to the nearby the Hawthorn district of Portland. This is another area with trendy shops and restaurants. We looked through a few shops and Mary and Nadia even bought hats at one place. We had lunch at a really nice Lebanese restaurant, followed of course by Doughnuts and coffee!

We left there a bit before 3pm and took Mary and family to the airport for their flight back to LA. We are staying in Oregon for another 2 nights to explore a little further afield.

After saying our brief goodbyes, we headed out of Portland toward the border between Oregon and Washington State and closer to Mt Hood. This has been one of the most scenic and beautiful drives we have taken during our entire trip. The Columbia River is beautiful and the surrounding mountains were amazing from every angle. We stopped at Multnomah Falls, a waterfall literally on the side of the highway. It's a popular stop with a large carpark that was full when we got there. You can access the falls via an underpass under the road. The falls themselves were very pretty, but the path to get the best views was closed due to recent fire damage.

We then continued our drive to Mt Hood, which is another one of those landmarks that I think it's impossible to get sick of looking at.

Damien found accommodation for the next 2 nights at a large RV and camping park in the town of Welches not far from Mt Hood village. Our accommodation is a Tiny House and its, well, tiny! It turns out that it's also a little bit famous. Our house was one of the first to feature on what is now a popular genre of reality TV shows extolling the virtues of living in tiny homes. The story of it being built and some of the travels that it's owners have taken while living in the tiny house have all been made into TV shows.

The house incredibly well designed, with storage solutions shoved into every possible place. It's really cosy and cute, but I don't think that we could "go tiny" full time! It's located in the Tiny House Village section of the park, where there are about 15 or so other tiny homes some of which are lived in full time by their owners.

We had dinner at a local pub which we are quite sure is not a popular tourist spot! The food we had was really good but we didn't stay around for Karaoke! We then headed back to our tiny house and watched some TV on the pull down projector screen that is the same width as the entire house. It's the only big thing about the entire place! We then made our way up the very creative staircase to our bedroom loft for a very comfortable night's sleep.
