US Trip 2018

We left the hotel a little earlier to make a head start on our trip to Memphis. As we left New Orleans we drove over the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, which is apparently the longest bridge in the world over a single body of water. It's over 23 miles long and sits really close to the water. It was really impressive.

New Orleans to Memphis

May 22, 2018

We left the hotel a little earlier to make a head start on our trip to Memphis. As we left New Orleans we drove over the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, which is apparently the longest bridge in the world over a single body of water. It's over 23 miles long and sits really close to the water. It was really impressive.

We drove into Mississippi and visited a town called Nachez. It is an old town on the bank of the Mississippi. There were a lot of impressive old buildings and we visited several plantation houses in the area. The first house we visited was called Longwood and was built in the 1860s. The owner had some grand plans for the house but civil war and the death of the owner meant that only one of the five floors was completed. The completed floor included a lot of original furniture and artwork and was really quite beautiful. Sadly we weren't allowed to take photos. We then went up to the incomplete floors which gave us an opportunity to see how the building was constructed. It was a really fascinating, beautiful and ambitious building.

After that we visited several other stately homes. Some these have been left to decay over the centuries and are overgrown with plant life. The buildings look eerily beautiful but it's also sad to think that the buildings will never be lived in or appreciated for their original beauty again.

The rest of the drive to Memphis was long but otherwise uneventful. We have now settled into our hotel and started looking at plans for our day in Memphis tomorrow. The only question we have is, to Graceland or not to Graceland?!
