US Trip 2018

Jetlag is still wreaking havoc with our sleeping patterns, so we had a slightly later start today.

First order of business was to find Nadia a decent cup of coffee, so we headed back to South Congress to get a coffee from one of the cafes. With that very important step taken care of we could make a start on our day

We needed a couple of things so drove around to find a Walmart and then a Best Buy. We then just spent some time exploring around the outskirts of town and before we knew it it was time for lunch.

We had driven past a BBQ joint called Terry Black's Barbecue a couple of times. It had a sign claiming it is one of the 50 best BBQ joints in the world, so we wanted to give it a try. The smoke aroma in the carpark was promising and the inside didn't disappoint. It is a very casual buffet style place. You walk in and get your food first up - you can't get a table until you have your food! You serve up your choice of sides and then head to the meat guy who carves up your choice in front of you.

You pay for the meat by weight so they weigh it and

then you take your tray and find a table. We shared some brisket, pork ribs and sausage, which were all delicious. Nadia was also pleased to have her first glass of real American lemonade for this trip.

From there we headed to the Bullock Texas State History Museum. It was interesting to learn about Texas' history from Spanish times and attempted French Settlement to Mexican rule and the fight for independence and then becoming a US state.

We headed back to the hotel later in the afternoon for a short rest before thoughts turned to dinner. We decided that we felt like Mexican this time, so we did a bit of research and found somewhere that looked good. After driving out there, past Austin Lake and the very nice houses that surround that part of town, only to find that the restaurant that we were hoping to go to was not there anymore.

Instead we headed to another restaurant nearby which turned out to be a very good choice. Nadia had Chimichangas, just to say that she had eaten something called a Chimichanga. Happily it also happened to be delicious. Damien chose a few small items from the menu, which turned out to be pretty big things when there were brought out.

Tomorrow we head out of Austin to San Antonio. Austin looks like a pretty cool place, with great shopping, food and coffee.
